Bombay HC Clears Path For Emergency’s Release After CBFC Edits Agreed Upon

The makers of Emergency agree to CBFC's cuts, allowing the film for certification and release in two weeks, after more than a month of controversy.

The Bombay High Court has ended the legal troubles surrounding Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated film Emergency’s release. On Friday, Zee Studios, which co-produced the film, told the court they have accepted the cuts suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This agreement paves the way for the movie to finally be released after many delays.

Senior Advocate Sharan Jagtiani, who represents Zee Studios said that all the necessary edits, as recommended by the CBFC’s reviewing committee will be finished in two weeks. After these changes, the CBFC will check the edits and issue a certificate, allowing the film to be shown in theatres.

The court accepted these statements and ended the plea filed by Zee Studios. Justices Burgess Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla were in charge of the case and confirmed that the film will soon be ready for audiences.

Originally set to release on September 6, Emergency faced several delays because the CBFC did not give it a certificate, saying that certain cuts were needed. The film sparked controversy when Sikh groups, including the Shiromani Akali Dal expressed worries about how the film portrays their community. The movie which stars Kangana as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been accused of getting historical facts wrong.

Zee Entertainment previously claimed that the CBFC was delaying the certification for political reasons, especially with the Haryana elections coming up.

With the producers and the CBFC reaching an agreement, the release of Emergency now looks likely. Once the edits are confirmed, the CBFC will give a certification within two weeks and the film will finally be ready for viewers.

Kangana Ranaut, who directed and co-produced the film, had shown her frustration over the delay but can now look forward to presenting her latest project to the audience. Meanwhile, Emergency’s release date is yet to be officially announced.
