List Of Bollywood Actors Who Didn’t Hesitate Taking Up Controversial Roles

From Aishwarya Rai to Janhavi Kapoor, these actors not only made headlines but also landed into trouble for either portraying an already controversial character or playing a certain character on screen.

Bollywood films have experienced their own share of witnessing severe objections from people for movies that endorse controversial characters or remarks that some find offensive. What follows next are legal notices, protests, or even worse, bans. It’s not just the released movies that face these backlashes, sometimes even an unreleased movie lands into hot water, which has become a much more common trend if we had to take the current scenario into consideration.

Here’s a list of actors who faced severe backlash for either roping in a controversial character or playing a certain character in a controversial manner

1. Kangana Ranaut in Thalaivi

With her constant blatant remarks and insensitive comments, Kangana likes to keep things that way not just in her private life but also in her professional life. The Queen actress took things to another level when she recently did a biopic on the former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha, for which the actress was slapped with a legal notice from the Madras High court. Even the release of the film was tried to restrain by Deepa Jayakumar, the legal heir of the AIADMK party. The legal notice claimed that the makers of the movie have portrayed their own version of Jayalalitha and that it might tarnish the private life of the politician.

2. Aamir Khan in PK

Who doesn’t remember the Aamir Khan starrer 2013 film “PK”, the movie was indeed a hit at the box office although garnered several backlashes from the viewers. The movie was been criticized for ‘maligning Hinduism’ and Aamir was even slammed for playing a character that questions religious beliefs and faith of people and insulting the holy godmen, in the name of superstition

3. Kartik Aryan in Pati Patni aur Woh

Kartik Aaryan tried pulling a similar stunt in this movie by delivering a breathtaking monologue, something that had gone famous in his previous movie “Pyaar ka Punchnama”. When the short trailer of the movie was released, people found the monologue scene extremely condescending which was in the light of marital rape. The entire sequence was then edited before the film hit theaters.

4. Shahid Kapoor in Kabir Singh

This Telugu remake of “Arjun Reddy” was indeed a super hit with a great storyline and catchy tracks. While many lauded shahid for his stellar performance in the film, the majority of the viewers found the movie that endorses ‘misogyny’ and that the character was very regressive and misogynistic. Shahid was slammed for portraying a character that promotes toxic masculinity.

5. Aishwarya Rai in Jodha Akbar

The Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai starrer is unarguably one of the most classic Bollywood films however the movie had to face several protests from Karni Sena, a Rajput community organization. They claimed that the Ashutosh Gowariker movie misinterpreted many facts and accused them of presenting it wrongfully. Per their claims, Jodhabai was married to Akbar’s son Jehangir (Salim).

6. Janhvi Kapoor in Gunjan Saxena

Hardly does one come across a biopic that stirs controversy, on the other hand, biopics are considered to be inspiring to the viewers. But Janhavi starrer movie, which was based on the life of India’s first woman pilot Gunjan Saxena, got into some hot water when it was claimed that a batch of seven women pilots first commenced on their IAF training aircraft five years before Gunjan joined in 1999. Another flight lieutenant Sreevidya Rajan claimed herself as the first woman to fly in Kargil.
