DYK? Anushka Sharma’s ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’ Remade Scene-By-Scene In South With Vaani Kapoor As Lead

Did you know Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma's 'Band Baaja Baaraat' was remade in the South film industry as 'Aaha Kalyanam' featuring Vaani Kapoor and Nani in the lead roles with scenes, storyline, beats and appearances completely mirroring the original?

Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma’s Band Baaja Baaraat, the 2010 film that captured hearts with its catchy Ainvayi Ainvayi and Dum Dum beats and for the undeniable chemistry between the lead actors. From their playful bond to their heartfelt romance, still resonates with fans. But did you know that this iconic romantic drama was remade in the South as a Telugu-Tamil bilingual film Aaha Kalyanam in 2014 under the same Yash Raj Films (YRF) banner? This featured Bollywood actress Vaani Kapoor opposite Telugu star Nani. While the original film was a massive commercial success, the remake didn’t quite make the same impact and magic in its region.

Let’s explore how Nani and Vaani Kapoor’s Aaha Kalyanam was fully replicated through Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma’s Band Baaja Baaraat from scene-by-scene, beat-by-beat to costume-by-costume.

The Original Success of Band Baaja Baaraat

Anushka Sharma’s career soared post-Band Baaja Baaraat, thanks to her electric chemistry with Ranveer Singh. The movie’s refreshing mix of drama, comedy and vibrant wedding songs became a timeless hit. However, Aaha Kalyanam though it picturized with the same zeal, couldn’t live up to expectations.

Why Aaha Kalyanam Failed to Impress?

Frame-to-Frame Remake Criticism

Critics felt the remake lacked originality. Gokul Krishna, the director of Aaha Kalyanam was criticized for not adapting the script to suit regional sensibilities. A review in The Hindu highlighted on this stating, “Gokul Krishna’s remake follows the original almost beat for beat, but never does anything more. And despite some wonderfully conversational dialogue, we’re left with the strange feeling of watching a Hindi movie dubbed in Tamil.”

While trade analyst Trinath also added this sentiment, “Aaha Kalyanam was a frame-to-frame copy of Band Baaja Baaraat, which made it unappealing. In its opening weekend, both Tamil and Telugu versions collected only Rs. 2.01 crore, a poor number considering Yash Raj Films’ reputation.”

Also, other trade analysts pointed out that YRF’s first venture into South Indian cinema didn’t meet expectations. The lack of regional adaptation and over-reliance on the original’s blueprint were cited as key reasons for the film’s failure.

Visual and Costume Parallels

From the film posters’s design-by-design to costumes’ details to colour choices, everything in Aaha Kalyanam mirrored the original. Critics noted how even small details, such as the black and golden-colored costumes of the lead actors in the dance sequence, were inspired.

Anushka Sharma vs. Vaani Kapoor: A Tale of Timing

While Anushka Sharma had established herself with hits like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Badmaash Company, Vaani Kapoor was relatively new. Though she delivered a solid performance, the timing and execution didn’t click as well as it did for Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Baaraat.

On the Work Front

Anushka Sharma has taken a break from Bollywood to focus on parenting and she was last in a captivating cameo in Netflix’s Qala. Meanwhile, Vaani Kapoor’s last release ‘Khel Khel Mein’ earned a critical acclaim and now she is busy with upcoming films like Badtameez Dil, Raid 2 and more.

While Aaha Kalyanam didn’t achieve the success of Band Baaja Baaraat, it serves as a reminder that remakes need to balance inspiration with innovation. By copying frame for frame, the Tamil-Telugu bilingual missed an opportunity to stand out. Still, the film remains a curious case in the journey of Anushka Sharma and Vaani Kapoor under the YRF banner.
