Anupam Kher Recalls His Family’s Horrifying Story During Kashmir Exodus In 1990

Anupam Kher shares how his maternal uncle was one of the victims during Kashmir exodus in 1990.

Actor Anupam Kher will be next seen in Vivek Agnihotri’s directorial ‘The Kashmir Files’. The film is based on the horrifying exodus of lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir valley in 1990. During a recent press conference, actor Anupam Kher got emotional as he shared his personal story relating to the sad historic event.

He said, “My mother’s younger brother saved his hard-earned money the entire life and built a home in Srinagar in 1987. He was very happy to finally have his own home. And after 6-7 months, he started receiving threats that he must leave the valley. He was told that they have killed his neighbour and if doesn’t leave, he would be next. So, one night, he and his family left the valley in a Fiat car. They were four people- my uncle, his wife and their two children. Whatever belongings of their lifetime they could stuff in that car, they did, and they settled in Delhi. He was so traumatised by this incident that he died after 3 years or so. My mother always talks about them.”

Anupam Kher mentioned that 32 years have passed but the Kashmiri Pandits have still not been able to go back to their hometown. He said, “We stay in 5-star hotels for several days, but eventually, we crave to go home and sleep on our own bed. We go to America and still look for Indian food.”

He added, “When my mother saw our film ‘The Kashmir Files’, she didn’t speak to anybody for two days because her memories were revived. She said, ‘Why did you show me this film?’ When Article 370 was revoked in Kashmir, she kept asking if we could go back there.”

‘The Kashmir Files’ will be released in theatres on 11th March.
