Tanishaa Mukerji’s recent revealing details about her childhood fights with her sister Kajol made headlines, not just for that but also for her strong views on feminism. In a candid interview with Hauterrfly, she shared her thoughts on growing up in a family of strong women, freezing egg, and why she believes America is not a feminist country while India is the most feminist nation in the world.
Tanishaa Mukerji’s Take on Feminism & Women’s Freedom
During the conversation, Tanishaa Mukerji expressed her views on feminism, stating that she does not believe in the term because it originates from America. She said, “Pehle toh I don’t believe in this word ‘Feminism’ because yeh America se aaya hai and that is the most non-feminist country. (First of all, I don’t believe in the word ‘Feminism’ because it has come from America, and that is the most non-feminist country.)”
She questioned the concept of feminism in modern Western societies, pointing out restrictions faced by women in the U.S. “I’m sorry, but yeh America kya desh hai jo apne auraton ko states mein abortion allowed nahi hai like ek aurat President nahi bani hai, itne saalon tak vote nahi kar pa rahe the aur aapko lagta hai vaha freedom hai? (I’m sorry, but what kind of country is America where women are not allowed abortions in some states, a woman has never become President, they couldn’t even vote for so many years, and you think there is freedom?)”

India: A Country That Respects Women
While critiquing America, she praised India for its deep-rooted respect for women. She firmly stated, “India is the most feminist country in the world.” Supporting her claim, she added, “Yes, hamare issues hai lekin yeh issues are not because humare auraton ko hamare culture mein respect nahi hai. Rather, Hinduism mein respect for women is there, it is ingrained even in the men and women. (Yes, we have issues, but they are not because women are not respected in our culture. In fact, Hinduism has deep-rooted respect for women, which is ingrained in both men and women.)”
Tanishaa Mukerji further explained that societal changes over time including British rule and overpopulation, have led to cultural degradation. “Hindu culture mein yeh baat hai ki hum aurton ko respect karte hai but of course because of the British hamara culture karaab hogaya hai and because of the overpopulation, hamari society karaab hogayi hai. (Hindu culture teaches us to respect women, but of course, our culture was disrupted because of the British, and due to overpopulation, our society deteriorated.)”
On the professional front, Tanishaa Mukerji has been a part of films like Neil N Nikki, Sarkar, Anna and Sarkar Raj. She also gained popularity as the first runner-up in Bigg Boss 7. Now, she is all set to make her Marathi cinema debut with Veer Murarbaji.
