Amid the lockdown imposed because of the novel coronavirus outbreak, many filmmakers had to halt the shooting process indefinitely. Apart from that, the release dates of many much-awaited films of 2020 got postponed as the theatres across the nation remain shut. Pertaining to the on-going situation many filmmakers decided to skip the theatrical release of their film and release it on an OTT platform instead.
The latest film to join the bandwagon is Mahesh Bhatt’s Sadak 2. The filmmaker confirmed the same in a recent interview. He said that releasing the film digitally is the only option left with him. Bhatt said, “It (number of COVID-19 cases) is increasing day-by-day instead of subsiding. In this situation do you think the theatres will open? And even if they do and Sadak 2 is released, will people go to watch it? People have to protect their families. Today, life is more important, I am compelled to come (on digital platform) because I don’t see any light in the near future. This is the best I can do to survive. There are certain things that you do, not out of choice but out of compulsion. This is the only option left. It is a no-brainer.”
Later Mahesh Bhatt also added that releasing a film on an OTT platform is just a phase and not a long time option. He said that the digital release of films doesn’t mean that the theatres will shut down as people need outing and big-screen entertainment is always fun.
He then mentioned, “It is just a temporary phase and we need to understand it rationally and not blast or put each other down. We should lift each other up. I have got no option, so I will definitely consider OTT. We have not made this film to put it in lock and key. We want to bring it to people so that they enjoy the film.”
The filmmaker also revealed that two-day shoot for Sadak 2 still remains on the list. Reports state that the shooting of Sadak 2 will resume in the first week of July.
