Coldplay’s recent back-to-back concerts in India have been the talk of the town. While the band left fans mesmerized, Jasleen Royal’s performance as the opening act didn’t do well with the audience which has sparked controversy. Known for her viral hits like Love You Zindagi, Ranjha, Heeriye and more Jasleen found herself at the center of criticism with many calling her performance underwhelming. Not just fans but even industry insiders had strong opinions about the event. Among them, singer Antara Mitra boldly called out Jasleen’s performance, setting off a heated discussion in the Indian music scene.

Antara Mitra Slams Jasleen Royal’s Performance At Coldplay Mumbai Concert

Antara Mitra, the voice behind popular tracks like Gerua, Bheegi Si Bhaagi Si, Janam Janam, Saree Ke Fall Sa and more, who also judge Zee Bangla’s reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2024 has took to Instagram to share her thoughts. She reposted a viral clip of Jasleen singing Love You Zindagi during the Coldplay concert held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

In her now deleted Instagram story, Antara directly criticized the choice of representation for such a massive platform. She wrote, “The brightest idea was this representation of the Indian music scene for Coldplay,” adding, “I am shamelessly calling this out! Because someone from the same field should. I have an iron gut, so I am doing it. Please, all the biggies out there making decisions at this level, my only request is to put music on top and then your number game 🙏.”

Netizens Back Antara Mitra

Antara Mitra ’s comments on Jasleen Royal’s live quickly gained traction on social media, especially on platforms like Reddit. Fans were quick to rally behind her, praising her talent and calling her an underrated gem in the industry. One user wrote, “Antara Mitra is such an underutilized singer. I wish she had gotten better opportunities.” Another commented, “Her voice is beautiful; I’ve heard her live. She would’ve done a much better job than Jasleen.”

However, some users expressed surprise at the backlash against Jasleen. One user remarked, “I thought Jasleen was well-liked before this concert.” This sentiment reflects the popularity Jasleen has enjoyed with her hit tracks like Nachde Ne Saare, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, Sang Rahiyo and many more.

Vishal Dadlani’s Indirect Criticism

Before Antara’s direct critique, singer-composer Vishal Dadlani had also shared his thoughts in an Instagram story that fans believe was aimed at Jasleen. He wrote, “I’m really sorry, but when you put a basic-to-bad singer in front of a large crowd on a large stage, all you’re doing is showing more people that the individual can’t really sing… My gosh, how embarrassing! For the country, the artiste, the public, as well as ‘the scene.’”

Though Vishal didn’t mention Jasleen by name, fans were quick to connect the dots assuming his comment was directed at her performance.

As the debate continues, Jasleen Royal remains silent on the matter. While fans and critics dissect her performance, many are questioning the criteria for selecting artists to represent Indian music on such a global stage.
