Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao Reveal Their Terms of Relationship After Divorce

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao have announced their divorce in a joint press release.

It came as a surprise to many when Aamir Khan (56) and his wife Kiran Rao (47) announced their divorce even though the couple had in December 2020, along with Azad and the actor’s daughter Ira Khan celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary at the Gir National Park.

In an official joint statement released, the couple revealed, “In these 15 beautiful years together we have shared a lifetime of experiences, joy and laughter, and our relationship has only grown in trust, respect and love. Now we would like to begin a new chapter in our lives – no longer as husband and wife, but as co-parents and family for each other.”

Further elaborating the terms of their divorce, they added, “We began a planned separation some time ago, and now feel comfortable to formalise this arrangement, of living separately yet sharing our lives the way an extended family does. We remain devoted parents to our son Azad, who we will nurture and raise together.”

“A big thank you to our families and friends for their constant support and understanding about this evolution in our relationship, and without whom we would not have been so secure in taking this leap. We request our well wishers for good wishes and blessings, and hope that – like us – you will see this divorce not as an end, but as the start of a new journey. Thanks and love, Kiran and Aamir,” the statement further read.

The couple had first met on the sets of “Lagaan” (2001 film). Kiran was one of the assistant directors and at first it was just a professional relationship. According to Aamir, they were not even close friends. It was only after his separation and divorce from his first wife Reena Dutta that Aamir met Kiran again and they became close friends. Aamir had confessed that Kiran’s unexpected phone call had kindled the love in him, ‘Her phone call came and I talked to her for half an hour. When I put the phone down, I said, ‘My God, I am so happy when I talk to her.’ It struck me in that instant,”

The couple then went on to tie the knot in December 2005. In 2011, they were the proud parents of their son Azad Rao Khan.

Regarding their current projects, Aamir and Kiran stated that they will continue to work as collaborators on films, Paani Foundation, and other projects that they feel passionate about.
