American actor Austin Butler, is completely set to star in Luca Guadagnino’s new interpretation of the book ‘American Psycho’ by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate. The novel was first published in 1991, and was then adapted into a 2000 movie, featuring Christian Bale as Bateman, a wealthy, narcissistic, Manhattan investment banker who lives a double life as a serial killer.
Now as reported by Variety, the filmmaker is getting ready to create a new interpretation of Elis’ novel. Scott Z Burns, will be writing the storyline. So far, the other details reveal that this project comes from Hollywood studio Lionsgate and the production will be looked after by Frenesy Films. It will be executively produced by Sam Pressman, the son of Edward R Pressman who had produced the original movie through his company Pressman Film.
Earlier the rumors swirled that Jacob Elordi would be playing the role of Patrick Bateman, but the casting did not go successful. Butler, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic, is a highly loved actor in the industry. He recently received heavy appreciation for starring in Dune: Part Two.
American Psycho adaptation will be a unique challenge for Butler, given that he’ll be stepping into the role of a character that has already been portrayed this century, and has been a very memorable one too. Christian Bale’s turn as Bateman in Mary Herron’s admired 2000 film is a performance that still invites discussion almost a quarter of a century later. Guadagnino has previously said his film isn’t a remake, so hopefully this new spin on the material gives Butler ample opportunity to step out of the shadow of Bale’s sensational turn.
