Academy to Host First-Ever International Student Awards in London

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is set to host its first-ever awards ceremony outside the United States, honoring student filmmakers in London. The historic event will take place on October 14 in Leicester Square, marking the first international edition of the prestigious Student Academy Awards. This decision highlights the Academy’s growing global outlook, with its membership increasingly expanding beyond U.S. borders in recent years.

Among the winners, pre-announced this week, is Au Revoir Mon Monde, a French animated film about a man trapped in a giant fish costume, racing through a city as the world faces an apocalyptic meteor shower. Other winning projects include an experimental film about teenage sexual awakening from Taiwan, a short film set during China’s 1910 plague, and a documentary filmed in a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh.

The ceremony will reveal the gold, silver, and bronze placements for the winners, all of whom will be eligible to compete at the main Oscars in March 2025. While this 51st Student Academy Awards marks the first complete live award show to be held abroad, segments of the Oscars telecast have previously been broadcast from international locations.

CEO Bill Kramer expressed excitement about the move, saying, “As a leader in the international film community, and with our organization becoming more globally focused, the Academy is thrilled to bring the Student Academy Awards to London this year.” With about one-fifth of its membership now from outside the U.S., the Academy is expanding its global presence, including recent additions like Anatomy of a Fall director Justine Triet and the film’s star Sandra Hüller.
